Travel Law Experts at Simpson Millar Solicitors anticipate that the number of holiday illness claims made by travellers returning home ill from a First Choice Holiday Village in 2013 is likely to increase substantially.

First Choice sends a huge number of holidaymakers to its all inclusive Holiday Villages, and its portfolio of hotels has increased this year by 3 to include the: Holiday Village Majorca; Holiday Village Menorca; and the Holiday Village Kos.

Simon Lomax, Simpson Millar’s Holiday Illness Claims Manager, says:

“Its Holiday Village programme has been hugely successful over the last few years and it is anticipated that this will continue. However, on occasion the Holiday Villages have proved problematic for the tour operator as a consequence of large outbreaks of illness believed to have been caused by lapses in hygiene standards.”

“Simpson Millar LLP Solicitors has made compensation claims for many ill holidaymakers who have returned home from a First Choice Holiday Village ill with infections from Salmonella – Cryptosporidium – E coli – Dysentery and Campylobacter.”

Cryptosporidium at the Holiday Village Flamingo Beach

The latest incident involves claims of Cryptosporidium contracted by holidaymakers who recently returned from the Holiday Village Flamingo Beach in Lanzarote.

Holidaymakers are often infected when Cryptosporidium bugs are ingested by it's unsuspecting victim, and because they survive in water for long periods of time, the swimming pool at the hotel is suspected to be the most likely source of the infection.

As the Holiday Village intake increases towards the beginning of the school holidays our experts expect to see a similar pattern emerging as last year with incidents of salmonella at the Holiday Village Red Sea; E-coli at the Holiday Village Manar; and Cryptosporidium at the Holiday Village Costa Del Sol .

Bacterial and Parasitic Infections can be Avoided

Due to the number of holidaymakers travelling to these hotels hygiene practices should be of paramount importance to First Choice, as outbreaks of Salmonella and E coli particularly are preventable.

Holidaymakers returning to the UK with food poisoning are quite common, usually with mild symptoms, but sometimes infections may lead to post infective irritable bowel. Typical symptoms of Salmonella and E coli include nausea, sickness, stomach pains, and sudden diarrhoea that occurs (often within 72 hours) after ingesting contaminated food or water. Depending on the bacteria or pathogen ingested fever and chills, headaches, bloody stools, and dehydration may follow.

Red Sea Holiday Village Illness Outbreak

The symptoms described above may affect one hotel guest or a group of holidaymakers who ate the same food at the buffet or swam in the same faecally contaminated pool.

In 2010 there was a large illness outbreak at the Holiday Village Red Sea with holidaymakers returning with salmonella, campylobacter, and cryptosporidium infections. Although some claims are continuing Simpson Millar’s claims specialists have already recovered over £250,000 in compensation for its clients.

New Holiday Village Compensation Claims

As First Choice’s customers embark on their holiday to their new Holiday Villages Menorca; Kos; and Majorca we will be watching these hotels closely for cases of salmonella, E coli, cryptosporidium and other gastric infections.

These claims are worth far more than the holiday vouchers often given to holidaymakers who complain directly to First Choice and who extinguish their rights on settling their claim.

Holidaymakers who return ill are advised to seek advice for a leading travel lawyer and our experts are available on 0808 145 1353 for free no obligation advice on making an illness claim. Alternatively, please complete our enquiry form and we will call you back
