£8,750 Compensation for Dominican Republic Holiday Illness

Client Situation

Our client was enjoying a 7-night all-inclusive package holiday with TUI UK at the Bahia Principe in San Juan, Dominican Republic when she fell severely ill.

After starting to feel unwell, she began experiencing chronic diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting, nausea, fever, flu-like symptoms, headaches, fatigue and loss of appetite. Our client was referred to the hotel’s in-house medic, but her symptoms were so severe that she couldn’t walk there herself. As a result, a paramedic collected her and took her to the surgery.

She was treated with an IV drip to replace lost fluids and was given an injection, but her condition was so serious that she was eventually taken to the local hospital by ambulance.

At the hospital, she was treated with antibiotics, Ciprofloxacin and Buscopan, and a stool sample was taken, which showed that her illness had been caused by abundant bacteria, most likely from contaminated hotel food or unhygienic conditions.

Our client endured a very uncomfortable flight back to the UK and after returning home, she continued experiencing symptoms such as bloating, nausea and flatulence. Furthermore, she became intolerant to some foods, as they triggered her symptoms.

She sought advice from her GP and had to take another 2 weeks off work after her holiday.

Next, we arranged a medical examination from a gastroenterologist, which confirmed that she was suffering from severe gastroenteritis. The medical report also demonstrated that she was suffering from post-infective Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), which was likely to persist for a few years

The Outcome

After the medical reports were issued, TUI UK offered a compensation settlement of £8,750, which was accepted by our client.
