First Choice Pay Out £10,800 in Compensation as Couple’s Holiday is Ruined by Illness

First Choice Holidays have recently paid out a total sum of £10,800 in respect of a couple, whose holiday to the Red Sea Holiday Village was ruined by illness.

Mr and Mrs Round were amongst a group of holidaymakers that suffered from symptoms including diarrhoea, nausea, stomach cramps and high temperature further to staying at the hotel and who contacted Simpson Millar upon their return to provide them with advice and assistance.

"Poor hygiene" caused illness

First Choice failed to admit liability for the illnesses and Simpson Millar’s lawyers therefore proceeded to gather evidence in support of the claims, including comprehensive medical evidence which determined that on balance, it was "poor hygiene" that caused the illnesses.

Andrew Tarling, one of Simpson Millar’s Holiday Claims experts has confirmed that the couple helpfully identified a number of hygiene issues at the hotel which unfortunately are commonly identified in many of the all-inclusive hotels sold by UK tour operators.

Andrew Tarling, Holiday Compensation Claims Manager commented, "All too often I am contacted by holidaymakers that have been ill as a result of staying at all-inclusive hotels where quite frankly, little or no hygiene standards appear to be enforced. Some of the most common issues relate to food being left to stand at unhygienic temperatures for long periods of time, the presenting of undercooked food, birds and insects being allowed to contaminate food and hotel swimming pools being inadequately maintained".

"Tour operators need to realise that the wellbeing of their customers is important and in my opinion, could do much more to prevent common infections such as salmonella and e.coli from being contracted on the holidays that they provide".
